We watched Trains, Planes and Automobiles on Thanksgiving and it got me thinking about the movies we usually watch around Christmastime. Sure, there are the classics like White Christmas and Miracle on 34th Street, and my personal favorite Christmas Comes to Willow Creek, but there also some great ones that aren't technically considered Christmas movies. Here are a few of my favorites:
Little Women ~ This movie still makes me cry after all these years. I remember seeing it in the theater when it first came out. Long before he became a huge movie star (and Batman!) I had a huge crush on Christian Bale. I first fell in love with him in Newsies, but that's an entirely different blog post.
Courage Mountain ~ A great adventure! The scenery is gorgeous and there's even a little romance story on the side.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang ~ This is a pretty crazy movie and not necessarily a feel good Christmastime flick, but it sure is entertaining and Val Kilmer is great alongside Robert Downey Jr.
Just Friends ~ Ryan Reynolds is awesome in this movie and the scenes with him and the guy who plays his brother crack me up.
Funny Farm ~ I love movies about writers and Chevy Chase doesn't disappoint in this funny movie about a writer who moves to the country with his wife.
What are some of your favorite non-Christmas Christmas movies?

Hockey Daydreams
I've been having such a blast posting photos over on my new blog, Wings and Daydreams!
With birds, it's so much easier because I can just look out my window and snap a few photos of what I see. Whereas with hockey, my options are much more limited. You see, I live almost 4 hours from the nearest NHL team (or any hockey team for that matter!), the San Jose Sharks. As much as I'd like to post pics of cute hockey players here every day, unfortunately there aren't any hanging out in my backyard. If only!
Until I can move somewhere where it's not 90+ degrees seven months out of the year and build a hockey rink in my backyard to attract hockey hunks, I'm content to put out nectar and sunflower seeds and attract creatures of the winged variety.
See, romance can be found in the birding world, too! |
So, I invite you to join me over on Wings and Daydreams where I share all of my birding adventures and post my best pics. I've even been tweeting from my new Twitter account and haven't missed a day in over two months! Wonder how long I can keep this streak going...

Oh, Baby!
I just finished watching Supernatural's latest episode "Baby." This was the best episode I've seen in a while--maybe ever. It especially resonated with me because it had some of the same elements as the book I've been working on. I can't give much away yet (all in good time), but I can say two words about it: Road Trip. Maybe there will be some "night moves" worked in there, too. ;)
Carry on...

Whiskers and Catnaps
My cat looks eagerly outside, her tiny nose pressed against the screen, watching as the early birds set off to get their worms. When she's seen enough, she saunters under the table toward me, weaving through the legs of the dining room chairs. Her fur is cold from the chilly morning air and it isn't long before she's curled up on her favorite chair, indulging in her first catnap of the day. Later, when the sunshine pours in, she'll warm her kitty bones and roll around on her back like the ham she is.
She talks to hummingbirds like they share their own special language that I can't understand. Then again, my cat talks to anything and everything. The fly she has cornered in the windowpane... Me when she thinks dinnertime is nearing and I'm not moving fast enough... I've even heard her talk to our hamster while he was running on his wheel. In my cat's defense, she was probably asking him what the big hurry is to get nowhere.
Now that Miss Talkative is quiet and curled up beside me in her position as co-writer, it's time for me to delve into the world of Red Valley, where my characters are waiting to see what kind of trouble I write them into today...

Simple Pleasures
One of my favorite times of day is in the early morning hours when the sun is just barely peeking above the mountains and the air is still chilly. The birds are just waking up from their nightly slumbers and cars idle in my neighbors' driveways, ready to whisk them away to work.
And here I am, sitting at my desk (a huge farmhouse table I searched high and low for), filling up blank pages with words of romance and conflict and falling in love. The house is quiet--there's no TV or music to distract me, just the birds eating greedily from my bird feeders.
As territorial hummingbirds chase each other away from the nectar I put out, my characters' voices fill my head and I scribble furiously to capture every one of their thoughts, words and feelings. Some days the words don't come so easily and the voices stay silent. But some days, when the morning sunlight shines through the trees just right, the words flow beautifully and plentiful, long past sunrise.
Somehow I have a feeling it doesn't matter how I get the words down, only that I do.

Treasures
I recently came across the cutest collectibles store! (For their Facebook page, click here.) Over the course of a few different visits, I found several items I just had to bring home with me.
On the top right is a wall art canvas and I fell in love with the cute little bird and his nest. The bird journal was only five dollars and the perfect place to jot down my birding discoveries. The shabby chic stool/ottoman is great for my office and can be used as a chair or table, but my cat seems to have claimed it as her own.
I can't wait to see what treasures my next visit will bring!

Wings and Daydreams
I know the subject of birdwatching doesn't appeal to all of you--to each his/her own--but these amazing winged creatures sure bring me a whole heck of a lot of joy. Because of that, I wanted to have a place where I can post as many bird photos as I want without the fear of alienating my readers here on my author blog.
So, I had an "Aha!" moment and decided to create a specific blog where I could write and rave about birds as often as I like. I just got a new camera to go along with my season pass to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge and there will be many more photos to come.
The new blog is called Wings and Daydreams and I've had so much fun putting it together. Stop by and say hello and read more about what I found when I went through my old journal.
Now I'm headed back into the writing cave where my characters are calling my name. (Sometimes they are louder than the birds outside my window!) I'm working on a new book (along with its sequel) and if all goes well, I'll be able to share some more details about them here in the next month or so.
Until then, I'll be writing my little heart out to distract myself from wishing hockey season was here already.
Wishing you wings and daydreams,
Rachelle

New Adventures with Old Things
I could have wandered around the antique mall for hours, but after a while Hubby started to get anxious and pulled me toward the door. (In his defense, we were nearing lunch time and his belly was grumbling :)
Next time I will definitely bring my camera so I can take pictures of all the wonderful things I saw. Like the old Post Office boxes (with keys!), cute sewing tables, the painting of an old ship teetering on the ocean waves... So much inspiration in one place! (And this was in real life and not on Pinterest!)
Now I find myself suggesting we go on little road trips so I can check out all the antique stores along the way!
What kind of treasures have you found in antique stores?
